A novel clean biopolymer-based additive to improve mechanical and microstructural properties of clayey soil

Conventional soil additives can cause serious environmental problems due to the greenhouse gas emission, consumption of huge amounts energy in their production process and threatening plant cover underground water quality. To eliminate these destroying effects, environmentally friendly have gained great consideration. Although polysaccharides are considered as powerful biocompatible recent studies, effect crosslinked hydrogel with elevated rheological adhesive properties has been very rarely investigated. In this paper, calcium chloride was used ionic crosslinker enhance recently proposed Persian gum biopolymer. A group macro micro scale tests including unconfined compressive strength, direct shear test, freeze thaw durability, scanning electron microscopy, stereo zoom Brunauer, Emmett Teller x-ray diffraction were conducted. The also performed on treated xanthan a common hydrocolloid stabilization. Combination 2% 2 molar determined optimum additive content. superior strength improvement (about 201.1%) than (83.5%) shows its strengthening performance. terms reduced mass loss pure from 19.1 10.25% that is comparable gum. Consumption lower at presence make stabilization projects economical efficient. Microscale confirmed impact modified interstructure by filling pores, agglomeration particles formation new cementitious compounds.
